Blue Jays Leadoff Hitter and Lineup Decisions Taking Shape

DUNEDIN, Fla. — While it's common to be reminded that it's still early in Spring Training when the topic of lineup decisions comes up, the calendar now reads March, and the questions are getting more urgent. As the Blue Jays look to implement a more dynamic approach under new hitting coach David Popkins, the lineup is starting to take shape with an eye on maximizing run production. Popkins and manager John Schneider are focused on a creative, situational approach to hitting, and they’re using golf clubs as metaphors for making the right decisions at the plate. Just as you wouldn't use a three-iron when you need a sand wedge, Popkins emphasizes the importance of using the right approach for the right situation. And when it's time to go for the big hit, he encourages players to take full advantage of the opportunity. “The big thing is how the lineup unfolds,” Schneider explained. “Everyone is going to have a role. If we're asking you to move the ball forward, you’ve got to do that. If we're asking you to move a runner over, do it. Then, when the opportunities arise for the guys in the middle, that's when you let loose.” This creates a more fluid and flexible lineup than in previous years, especially when it comes to the leadoff spot. While the heart of the lineup may remain stable, the rest is still being tinkered with, and the team's "creativity" in building the lineup could lead to some unexpected changes. We’ll likely see something closer to a finalized version later this week, but for now, the focus is on mixing things up and figuring out how to get the most out of every situation. And in case you missed it, Tony Taters made his mark in his first game as a Blue Jay—one of many to come! Joe Carter Jersey
